Both were 27 when they married, a relatively late age to enter matrimony in the settler society of the time. It was George’s first marriage, but Martha was a widow who had borne 4 children to her previous husband, Daniel Custis. Sadly, two had died very young, and the others only survived until young adulthood. They had no more children together, but took over the care of two of Martha’s grandchildren after the death of her son.

At the time of his marriage, George’s military career was well-established, having served with distinction in the 7 years war. Martha’s first husband died in 1757, leaving her a substantial inheritance. George proposed the following year, and the couple made a home in Mount Vernon, Virginia. George settled down to the life of a wealthy plantation owner, but was to return to the the battlefield as commander-in-chief of the victorious revolutionary army in the American War of Independence.

After presiding over the convention which drafted the American constitution in 1787, he became president in 1789, bringing stability to the fledgling union which was later to become the most powerful nation on earth. Martha moved with him to New York, then the capital, where she undertook a busy social schedule, hosting numerous parties and gatherings.

George left office in 1797 and they returned to a quiet life in Mount Vernon. Unfortunately, George didn’t get much time to enjoy his retirement as he took ill and passed away in 1799. Martha, having already lost all four of her children, was grief stricken, and refused to enter their bed chamber after his death. She lived only three more years, passing away in 1802.

Throughout their married life, George and Martha Washington were a loving couple, devoted to their children and grandchildren. Together they helped found a strong, independent country and are both significant figures in American history.

Cinderella was a young maiden in medieval times. Her father passes away and her stepmother shows her true personality by condemning poor Cinderella to be a maid in her own house.

This just about the only part the two most famous versions of this story have in common. In the animated version Cinderella meets a fairy godmother while crying in the garden. The fairy godmother waves her magic wand while singing a spell putting Cinderella in a beautiful dress and creating a horse and carriage from a pumpkin and a mouse.

Cinderella then went to ball where she danced with Prince Charming and they fell in love. She dropped her shoe when running out of the ball because the spell was wearing off. The prince then took the shoe and made every maiden in the village try the shoe on. He soon found Cinderella and they were married and lived happily.

The other version was written by The Brother Grimm and had a darker side to it. At the beginning, the situation was the same. When the Prince came to claim the maiden who fit the shoe it went differently. The stepsisters tried their feet first but one had to cut off her own toe and the other had to cut off her own heal just to fit in the shoe. The story still ended the same thankfully.

Cinderella and Prince Charming has been enjoyed by many generations and will be enjoyed by many to come. It is a classic tale of heartbreak and happiness that is sure to please anyone who has a mind for fantasy.

Tramp And Lady A Love Story

The story of Tramp and Lady is a timeless one filled with adventure and a disregard of social levels. The characters Lady and Tramp are also very powerful by themselves. Their personalities and back stories give depth to their story.

Tramp is a stray silver mutt who spends his life living from one moment to the next. He does not have any family and spend the time when he is not begging for scraps looking after Peg and Bull, his fellow strays. Tramp’s greatest enemy would be the local dog catcher who is always trying to catch Tramp and his friends.

Lady comes from a very different world to Tramp. Lady is a cocker spaniel who lives rather comfortably with Jim Dear and his wife Darling. She has two friends Jock and Trusty who are a Scottish terrier and a bloodhound.

Tramp and Lady meet through a series of bad events. These bad things start with Jim Dear and Darling having a baby. After the baby is born they go on a trip leaving Aunt Sarah in charge of both the baby and Lady. Unfortunately this means that Aunt Sarah brings her Siamese cats with her. When Lady clashes with the cats Aunt Sarah takes her to the pet shop and muzzles her. Lady runs away but ends up being chased by stray dogs. This is when Tramp sees her and saves the day.

After saving Lady Tramp tricks a beaver into taking her muzzle off. That night he shows Lady what it’s like to live as he does and it ends with a candle lit dinner. However on the way home another series of events occurs that eventually lead to Tramp being sent to the pound. Luckily everything works out for them in the end.

Tramp and Lady are two characters that show that love can transcend such things like social class. Their love story shows that even seeming opposites can attract.

The Love Story Of Rhett And Scarlett Butler

Rhett and Scarlett Butler are the main characters ‘Gone with the wind’ a novel by Margaret Mitchell, published in 1936 and immortalised in the Hollywood blockbuster of the same name in 1939. With epic scenes like the rescue of Scarlett by Rhett from the burning city of Atlanta, the characters have become synonymous with romance and passion, capturing the imagination of viewers and readers alike.

Scarlett (played by Vivien Leigh in the film) is the daughter of a wealthy southern plantation holder and slave owner and the story opens just before the outbreak of the American Civil War. Although not conventionally beautiful, her feisty and flirtatious nature makes her irresistible to the local boys who compete for her affections. Despite her magnetic attraction, she is unable to win the heart of the only man she truly loves; her neighbour Ashley Hamilton whose sense of honour keeps him loyal to his genteel and ladylike wife, Melanie.

Rhett Butler (played by Clark Gable) is something of a renegade, a well-educated and wealthy man, who has made his fortune by gambling and other illicit means. He is a regular patron of local brothels and he is not well thought of in southern society which values ‘gentlemanly’ qualities.

The meeting of Scarlett and Rhett is a classic comic scene. Defying the conventions of the time, in which women were expected to be coy and deferential, Scarlett openly expresses her love to the newly engaged Ashley, who kindly but firmly rejects her advances. Unbeknown to her, Rhett is hidden in the room, listening with amused surprise. Upon discovering Rhett’s presence, Scarlett angrily declares “you sir are no gentleman” to which he replies “you madam are no lady!”.

Rhett is fascinated by Scarlett’s spirited nature and sets out to win her love. Throughout the novel, as the south is devastated by and ultimately defeated in the war, their paths continue to cross and they eventually marry and have a daughter. Scarlett, however, is unable to forget her feelings for Ashley and can never completely open her heart to Rhett, who becomes frustrated with her lack of affection.

It is only the death of Melanie which makes Scarlett realise that her and Ashley were never meant to be and that Rhett is her true love. Tragically, Rhett’s patience has finally run out, and, despite her desperate begging, he leaves her with another classic line, “frankly my dear I don’t give a damn”.

The story of Rhett and Scarlett shows how love can really be; difficult, complicated and painful. Does Rhett come back? Romantics like to believe so, but it is a question which has caused much speculation and spurned 2 attempted sequels. We all want a happy ending, and maybe in this case it might just be possible.

Dagwood And Blondie: Entertaining Americans For More Than 75 Years.

Dagwood and Blondie are two characters from the famous American comic strip called “Blondie”. Their first public appearance was in September 1930 and ever since then their antics have been a source of non-stop entertainment for not only Americans but English speaking people all over the world.

Dagwood And Blondie

Dagwood originally inherited a fortune, but when he married Blondie, which his family considered to be below his social standing, they disowned him. His love for Blondie therefore cost him dearly. He then started working at a construction company called J. C. Dithers & Company, where his boss is the very unpopular Mr J C Dithers.

Dagwood has a couple of things that he loves, including his kids, naps on the sofa, food and long baths. He also has quite a number of things he hates: Door-to-door salesmen, store salespeople, and persistent telemarketers. He also doesn’t like running into the mailman when he gets home every day and he hates being left behind by the carpool. Not to mention, of course, his intense dislike of his boss, Mr Dithers.

The series proved so popular that over the years it spread into other media as well. It became a star attraction in many daily newspapers. Radio shows were dedicated to the couple, and a whole series of films called Blondie were produced between 1938 and 1950.

During the period 1968-69 a TV series was produced in which Will Hutchins played Dagwood. Dagwood and his wife make several cameo appearance in other television series after that, including Garfield Gets Real and Mother Goose and Grimm.

Not many people (outside America anyway) are probably aware that the term “dagwood sandwich” had its origins in Dagwood’s love for a layered sandwich topped with an olive on a toothpick. This type of sandwich is now eaten all over the world, often by people having no idea where the name originated.

Dagwood and Blondie have so far appeared in more than 2000 newspapers around the world, and been translated into 35 languages.

On March 17th, 1905 Eleanor Roosevelt married F. D. R., but unlike most girls when they get married, Eleanor did not change her name. Eleanor’s maiden name and married name were exactly the same. She was born Eleanor Roosevelt to Elliot and Anna Hall Roosevelt. She was named after her father; she had two brothers and a half brother.

The couple who were actually distant relatives (5th cousins once removed) met in 1902 when she was 17 and he was 20. He was attending Harvard at the time and she completed her formal education. They became engaged the next year and the engagement was kept quiet for a month as Franklin’s mother tried to convince her son to not marry the young Eleanor.

While on a cruise with his mother he declared his undying love for Eleanor and informed his mother that while it might cause her pain to see them wed, that his mind and heart were made up and that they would be wed. The wedding occurred on St Patrick’s Day in New York City. The young bride was given away by her uncle, President Theodore Roosevelt, which attracted national attention.

The couple started their married life in New York City and also spent time in Hyde Park, New York. Franklin’s mother controlled all matters of the young couple’s home and it was not until they moved into the White House that Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt were allowed to live their married life.

The couple had 6 children and their marriage saw many struggles including FDR’s confinement to a wheel chair, and his affair with her social secretary. Over the years Eleanor also struggled with some close relationships with other men. It was never known if she cheated on Franklin. Together the couple resided in the White house and ran the country from 1933-1945 (He was the only president to ever be in office more than 8 years). The couple remained married until FDR’s death in 1945.
