Ronald And Nancy Reagan - How They Met And More About Their Lives

Ronald and Nancy Reagan were two darlings of the media. Their long marriage was often in the limelight and their devotion was just as often reported by both newspapers and television. Ronald Reagan was born on February 6, 1911 in Tampico, Illinois. He died on June 5, 2004, eleven years after he announced that he was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. His wife was Nancy Davis Reagan, born as Anne Robbins on July 6, 1921.

Ronald not only acted in 53 films. He also helped produce more than 400 training films for the US army. He was also a sportscaster. In 1967 he became governor of California and in 1981 became President of the United States of America for eight years. A less known fact is that Nancy was also an actress. She starred in 11 films and also wrote a couple of books. She was the driving force behind the Nancy Reagan foundation and is also involved with the National Alzheimer’s Association. They met for the first time during 1951, when she had a complaint about her name being used without her permission in the Hollywood Reporter. Ronald asked her to discuss this over dinner at the then La Rue Restaurant on Sunset Strip. This was the start of a life-long relationship that lasted for more than 50 years, until his death in 2004. Ronald proposed to Nancy during February of 1952 at their favorite restaurant. His proposal was apparently direct and without much ado: “Let get married”, he suggested. She accepted and the couple was subsequently married on March 4, 1952. The ceremony was only attended by a couple of their closest friends and took place at the Little Brown Church in the Valley, near Los Angeles.

After the wedding they had a dinner at their friend’s home in North Hollywood. There were no fancy receptions, no press. Just an intimate affair where two people who deeply loved each other declared their intention to stay together for a lifetime. In an era where marriage partners are often treated as disposable, the marriage of Ronald and Nancy Reagan set an example to the rest of America.
