Queen Victoria And Prince Albert

The Love Of Queen Victoria And Prince Albert
Queen Victoria And Prince Albert

For most of the monarchies in the 17th century, marriage was very important in solidifying relationships between countries, opening communication, and maintaining peace. This was true of England as well. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were cousins who were very close in age, barely months apart. The arranged marriage of Victoria to Albert was initiated by their uncle Leopold who had been King of the Belgiams. He felt that by arranging a marriage between Victoria and one of his nephews he would gain more power in England. So a meeting was arranged where Victoria would meet both Ernest and Albert who were sons of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Victoria would find one suitable for marriage.

The love affair that followed Queen Victoria and Prince Albert throughout their married life began upon first meeting. Victoria was taken with Albert almost from the first glance. He was obviously well educated by home tutors as Victoria had been. They shared many common interests and talked for long periods about different topics of the day. But, more than that they found very quickly that they genuinely like each other.

Victoria often referred to Albert as her friend and husband. She depended on his council for every decision that she made. To the public both the Queen and Prince presented a facade of coolness and distance. But when they were alone they were a family that loved and cared for each other.

Early in their married life both the Queen and Prince found that they shared a love for the country and the peace and tranquility of a life that could be shared with their nine children away from the many duties that were required of them as royals. To that end Prince Albert went about securing residences that allowed the family to get away from London as often as possible.

For the first six years of their marriage the Queen and Prince were never apart. It was not until 1846 that the Prince made a trip without the Queen and both suffered loneliness and despair at being apart. Aside from depending on the Prince as her trusted advisor the Queen also depended on him for support and love that would be found with no other.

While the Prince knew for some time that he was very ill, he never shared this information with the Queen or his children. He carried on with his duties, both public and private, and sought to assure that his children would all be successful and dedicated to the people they would serve. Even as he lay on his deathbed he rewrote a letter that had to be diplomatic and serve the best interests of his Queen. Then, after completing the letter, he died.

Having lost her husband and best friend the Queen was left alone. As many women who are totally in love with their husbands her life ended and the sovereignty that had been created by a Queen and her beloved consort over twenty years would end as well.
