Samson & Delilah
The story of Sampson and Delilah is a story of love, pride, betrayal and redemption. It appears in the Old Testament in the Book of Judges. It is an example of how foolish pride ruined a man but through grace, he found redemption and salvation.
Samson was a Nazarite who was a judge for twenty years. He fell in love with a beautiful Philistine woman named Delilah from the Valley of Sorek. It is unclear whether Delilah truly loved Samson. It is clear however that she played a key role in his fall from grace.
Samson was endowed with great strength, the secret of which came from his hair. Samson married Delilah, unaware that the Philistine rulers had offered her money to betray him. For 1,100 shekels of silver, she was to discover the secret to his great strength. The Philistines wanted this knowledge to defeat Samson and offer him to their god as a sacrifice.
Three times Delilah asked Samson for his secret and three times Samson provided her with false information. Each time Samson would tell Delilah the secret of his strength, she would have the Philistine captors set a trap. When they would attempt to overpower him, Samson would throw off his restraints and cast his enemies away. Delilah was embarrassed by her inability to know the truth about her husband’s strength. She nagged him constantly until one day he revealed that shaving his locks would rob him of his strength. A trap was set by Delilah and Samson was finally subdued, blinded by his captors.
Samson was brought before the Philistines, broken and humiliated. Tied between two pillars, the Philistines celebrated as they prepared to sacrifice him to their god Dagon. As Samson stood their, he prayed to God for the strength to destroy the Philistines and their temple. To atone for his foolish pride and waste of God’s gift, he also asked to die with the Philistines. His prayer was answered and he was granted the strength to push the columns apart, causing the temple to crash down on the Philistines. His death was a demonstration of the power of prayer.
